Who is Omar Khadr?

Omar Khadr – He was born in Canada, where he has a minimum connection with it. This also made his family rejected having a Canadian way of life which further took him to Afghanistan. There he fought for the Taliban that is where 15 years old Khadr was captured by the US force and transferred him to Guantánamo Bay where his life saved again. The reason for the capture was reported as the young Omar Khadr suspected to have killed the US soldier in the battle before his capture. On further for the same thing, he spends six years that is a quarter of his life in detention.
Standards of Juvenile justice and its prohibition on Khadr:
It is crystal clear that Omar Khadr was a minor when he was alleged and captured by the US Force. If you check on to the rights and law for the crime committed by children under the age of 18 are supposed to have some legal protections and special care which is appropriate to the child age. - Length of detention – As per the international standards, the arrested child can be in detention only as a measure of the last report that too for a short period. Whereas Omar Khadr was in detention at Guantánamo Bay for more than three years.
- Legal Assistance – Every child has their liberty that is entitled to prompt access over the legal and other assistance. Where Khadr was not allowed to access the legal counsel until he turns 18 that is for 2 years after his transfer to Guantánamo Bay.
- Separation from adults – In international laws every minor child’s liberty shall be separated from other adults. It may change in any rare cases when the child is best without separation. This was entirely not happened with the Khadr case where he was detained with general detainees.
- Contact with family – Every detained child has the right to contact their family and meet them. But in Khadr’s case, he was allowed to contact his family only once in three years and not allowed meeting his parents in visits.
Still, there are several things like education, recreation, juvenile justice, and rehabilitation assistance all these were not made available for Omar Khadr nor acknowledged him as a child used in the armed conflict.
