What is Omar khadr Story?

Omar Khadr is a Canadian who was locked up by the US at the age of 15 at Guantanamo Bay for a decade. He becomes guilty to the murder of the Christopher Speer. He request his conviction later and claiming that he wrongly pleaded guilty and he can go back to the nation where he remained in detention for extra three years. He sued the Canadian government for breaching his rights under the Charter of Rights and Freedoms act. This lawsuit was successfully settled three years ago with the payment of CA$10.5M and an apology by the federal government.

Why Omar Khadr was arrested?

Residents of many countries and politicians worldwide are willing to be aware of the Omar Khadr case especially his imprisonment, trial and eventual release.  They want to know about his personal life and other things about him. Omar Khadr is a Toronto-born Canadian. He is captured by the soldiers of the United States subsequent to a fire-fight in Afghanistan in 2002. He was only 15 years old at that time. He was the only minor to be convicted of supposed war crimes since the World War II and held for approximately 13 years.

Immigrant parents of Omar Khadr are his father Ahmed Said Khadr from Egypt and her mother Maha Elsamnah from Palestine. His father worked for popular Muslim charities located in both Pakistan and Afghanistan. His family had moved between Pakistan and Canada every so often and becoming friendly with Osama bin Laden, terrorist mastermind. He was arrested in 1995 as in connection with a bombing of the popular Egyptian embassy in Pakistan. However, he was freed one year after his arrest. He was later a suspect in the renowned 9/11 terror attacks in New York and Washington, D.C. His father sent him to Afghanistan to act as a translator in 2002 after the 9/11 attacks and the United States invasion of Afghanistan.

Ever-increasing obstacles in the early life of Omar Khadr

Omar Khadr was wounded at the age of 15 and captured by the qualified American forces as he was the only person in a group of militants to survive in a fire-fight.  He was accused of throwing grenades which killed and blinded U.S. Sgt. Christopher Speer and Sgt. Layne Morris in one eye respectively. He said he did throw grenades, but does not know whether it was the grenade that had killed Speer. He was one of the youngest prisoners ever held at the popular Guantanamo prison as he had just turned 16 in October 2002.

The polarized public opinion regarding the Omar Khadr case is one of the most important things to consider. The Canadian government opposed the transfer of Omar Khadr to Guantanamo Bay in the beginning and urged the United States to consider his juvenile status. However, the United States ignored requests of Canada.  The reasons for such denial are still unclear. The overall attitudes in Ottawa were hardened thereafter and the Liberal government started playing down the overall issues of the age of Omar Khadr.
